West African Bar Association Condemns Human Rights Abuses, Attacks On Judiciary, Legal Profession In Guinea-Bissau.

In a strong and unequivocal statement dated April 13, 2025, and signed by WABA Secretary General, Adesina Adegbite, the West African Bar Association (WABA), the umbrella body representing all Bar Associations in the West African sub-region has called for urgent international intervention in response to escalating systemic abuses in Guinea-Bissau.

The statement, released in English, French, and Portuguese to ensure broad regional reach, outlines a troubling pattern of oppression allegedly perpetrated by the country's leadership. WABA raises alarm over sustained attacks on the judiciary, legal practitioners, and political opposition, noting particularly grave concerns about the harassment of lawyers, the forced removal of the Bar Association from its headquarters, and threats against its President, Januário Pedro Correia.

WABA is urging immediate action from regional and international bodies, including ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations, to address the deteriorating rule of law and to safeguard democratic institutions in Guinea-Bissau.
