Standing Tall for Justice: Lessons from Julius Malema’s Keynote at NBA-AGC 2025

Image
Standing Tall for Justice: Lessons from Julius Malema’s Keynote at NBA-AGC 2025 The Opening Ceremony of the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference 2025 in Enugu was more than a spectacle of tradition and pageantry; it was a call to courage. In a charged keynote address, Julius Malema, leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters, reminded us that the law is not merely an instrument of regulation, but a weapon of liberation. He spoke with urgency about the duty of the legal profession to defend dignity, resist oppression, and give voice to the voiceless. Malema’s words cut to the heart of our responsibility as lawyers: That the law must liberate, not just regulate. That our duty is to stand tall against injustice, no matter how entrenched. That Africa must not remain shackled to the chains of neo-colonial dependency. That we, as lawyers, must re imagine institutions, restore dignity, and safeguard the independence of our people. As I listened, I was reminde...

Welcome to Enugu! Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro SAN and the Project Bar Ambassadors extend a heartfelt welcome to all conferees of #NBAAGC2025 This is more than a conference. It is a story of unity, tradition, and innovation—told with vision, energy, and heart. 💚⚖️ #ProjectBar #NBAAGC2025 #Aarenation #StreetLawyerNG Every conference begins with a welcome, but at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference 2025 in Enugu, the welcome carried a special weight. At the center of it was Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro SAN, visionary, mentor, and leader flanked by the vibrant Project Bar Ambassadors.  Together, they stood as the face of hospitality, opening their arms not only to colleagues and seniors, but to every conferee who journeyed to the Coal City to be part of this historic gathering. The video above captures this spirit. It is more than a greeting; it is a statement.  Aare’s presence constantly reminds the profession of its values service, unity, and excellence while the Amba...

World Humanitarian Day Statement by Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN.

World Humanitarian Day Statement by Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN.  Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we are reminded that humanitarianism is not an abstract global ideal but a daily responsibility to protect life, dignity, and justice within our own communities.  The theme, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities,” challenges us as Nigerians to stand against cruelty, violence, and practices that strip people of their humanity. This past week, our collective conscience has been shaken by three distressing events. A young lawyer, Mr. Innocent Igho of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch, was brutally murdered, robbing our profession of a bright light and wounding the very heart of justice. In Anambra State, a young widow was subjected to dehumanizing rituals at the very moment she deserved compassion and protection. And only days ago, a youth corps member, Elohor, serving her country under the National Youth Service Corps scheme, was assaulted by vi...

PUBLIC STATEMENT BY AARE OLUMUYIWA AKINBORO SAN ON THE SCREENING OF NEW SAN DESIGNATES BY THE DSS

Image
Public Statement by Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN.  I have followed with keen attention the recent development requiring newly cleared Senior Advocates of Nigeria to undergo screening by the Department of State Services (DSS). The conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is not a political appointment, nor is it an executive privilege. It is a professional recognition rooted in the provisions of the Legal Practitioners Act and administered solely by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC). To subject this process to external security vetting, after rigorous scrutiny has already been undertaken by the LPPC, is an intrusion that undermines both the independence of the profession and the sanctity of due process. The strength of the Bar has always been its autonomy. If we allow institutions outside the profession to insert themselves into its core processes without legal basis, we open the door to a precedent that may one day compromise not only the rank o...

Egbe Amofin O’odua Shows Full Force support and matched their Adoption of Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, with action in a rear display display of unity, strength and solidarity at the NBA Ondo Branch Law Week.  When Egbe Amofin O’odua, the foremost body of Yoruba lawyers, adopted Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, as its consensus choice for the 2026 NBA Presidency, it was a statement of confidence, unity, and strategic foresight.  At the just concluded NBA Ondo Branch Law Week, that statement came alive in full colour, as the Egbe demonstrated an extraordinary show of force that left no one in doubt that its support has moved from words to visible action. It was more than Aare arriving with his immediate team, it was a grand procession of Egbe’s finest sons and daughters, seasoned bar leaders, branch chairmen, and committed foot soldiers, converging in Ondo in a resounding display of loyalty and purpose. Legal heavyweights...

Ibom Air and the Comfort Emmanson Case: A Constitutional Breach That Demands Justice AARE OLUMUYIWA AKINBORO, SAN, DEMANDS JUSTICE OVER IBOM AIR’S INHUMANE AND DEGRADING TREATMENT OF MS. COMFORT EMMANSON

Ibom Air and the Comfort Emmanson Case: A Constitutional Breach That Demands Justice AARE OLUMUYIWA AKINBORO, SAN, DEMANDS JUSTICE OVER IBOM AIR’S INHUMANE & DEGRADING TREATMENT OF MS. COMFORT EMMANSON Abuja, Nigeria — August 12, 2025 'Ibom Air’s treatment of Comfort Emmanson, from public humiliation to indecent image circulation, is a clear violation of human rights under Section 34 of the Nigerian Constitution. Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, demands justice, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ dignity' I unequivocally condemn the degrading and unlawful treatment of Ms. Comfort Emmanson aboard an Ibom Air flight on 10 August 2025, and the subsequent imposition of a lifetime ban against her. The events, including her forcible removal from the aircraft, the stripping of her clothing in public, and the unauthorised dissemination of indecent images online constitute a flagrant violation of Section 34(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of N...

Ibom Air vs. Comfort Emmanson: Safety Is Not a Licence to Strip Away Rights

Image
Ibom Air vs. Comfort Emmanson: Safety Is Not a Licence to Strip Away Rights When Enforcement Becomes Abuse What began as an in-flight dispute ended with Comfort Emmanson in prison, facing multiple charges, and banned for life from flying with any Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) member airline. But behind the “unruly passenger” label lies something deeply troubling, a public stripping of dignity, privacy, and fair process. Let's xray rights violated in the process.  1. Dignity Violated Section 34 of the Nigerian Constitution is unambiguous: every person is entitled to dignity of the human person. Forcibly removing Emmanson’s clothing in public, while cameras rolled, is degrading treatment the kind of conduct human rights laws exist to prevent. 2. Privacy Shattered Section 37 guarantees privacy of person. Recording her in a state of undress and sharing that footage online without consent isn’t just unethical, it’s potentially criminal under the Cybercrimes Act. 3. Fair...

Crime, Code & Consequences: What To Kill a Monkey Teaches Us About Nigeria’s Cybercrime Laws.

Crime, Code & Consequences: What To Kill a Monkey Teaches Us About Nigeria’s Cybercrime Laws.  In the world of fast money and faster clicks, when does ambition cross the line into criminality? That’s the question Kemi Adetiba’s gripping new Netflix thriller, To Kill a Monkey, forces us to confront, and it couldn’t be more relevant. The series tells the story of Efemini, a struggling man pulled into the dark world of cybercrime by an old friend. What begins as a survival hustle soon morphs into a web of fraud, deceit, and digital manipulation, with consequences spiraling out of control. At The Street Lawyer NG, we’re not just watching movies, we’re x-raying them through the lens of the law. Let’s unpack the real legal implications of Efemini’s choices using Nigeria’s Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015. ⚖️ What Is the Cybercrimes Act? The Cybercrimes Act 2015 is Nigeria’s primary legislation for tackling digital offences, from inte...

The Man at the Center: Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro SAN and the Soul of the Egbe Amofin Conference.  Amidst the resplendent gathering of Yoruba legal minds at the Egbe Amofin O’odua National Conference, one figure stood with unmistakable clarity, Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro SAN, not simply in attendance, but in spirit, in speech, and in the subtle, powerful ways that true leadership announces itself, without noise, but never without impact. A narrative of presence, Of purpose, Of a man whose quiet charisma and deeply rooted convictions stirred both elders and the emerging generation of lawyers. In every captured moment, Aare’s posture speaks volumes: listening intently, engaging thoughtfully, connecting sincerely. Whether flanked by respected seniors of the Bar or surrounded by the eager eyes of young practitioners, Akinbor...

STATEMENT BY AARE OLUMUYIWA AKINBORO, SAN Past General Secretary, Nigerian Bar Association

Image
STATEMENT BY AARE OLUMUYIWA AKINBORO, SAN Past General Secretary, Nigerian Bar Association.  “THE CONSTITUTIONAL POWERS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL MUST BE RESPECTED” I have taken note of the recent development in which officers of the Anambra State Ministry of Justice, including the Director of Public Prosecution, were invited and released on bail by the Nigeria Police Force following the exercise of the constitutional power of the Attorney General of the State to discontinue criminal proceedings through a nolle prosequi. It is also concerning that an invitation was extended to the Attorney General of the State in this regard. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), in Section 211, clearly vests the Attorney General of a State with the power to take over, continue, and/or discontinue criminal proceedings at their discretion. This power, once exercised, is not subject to external control or interference by any authority, including the Police,...

Breaking the Myths: What Nigerian Women Need to Know About Dissolution of Marriages.

Image
💔 Breaking the Myths: What Nigerian Women Need to Know About Dissolution of Marriages.  Too many women in Nigeria are stuck in unhappy or even abusive marriages—not because they want to stay, but because they’ve been misinformed. The topic of divorce, or more formally dissolution of marriage, is still surrounded by stigma, fear, and cultural myths. These harmful misconceptions continue to silence women, limit their options, and deny them justice. At The Street Lawyer NG, our mission is to educate, empower, and connect everyday people to the law, starting with the truth. 📚 What Does Nigerian Law Say? Under the Matrimonial Causes Act, either spouse in a statutory marriage (i.e., court-registered) has the right to file for divorce. Grounds for dissolution include: Adultery Cruelty or abuse Desertion (for at least one year) Irretrievable breakdown of marriage Willful neglect or failure to fulfill marital obligations Separation for a continuous period of at least two years...
