Can Nigeria’s Democracy Survive Weak Institutions? NBA Abuja Law Week 2026 To Host Crucial Conversation On Institution Building.

Across Nigeria, conversations about democracy often focus on elections, political actors, and leadership failures. Yet, beneath every stable democracy lies something far more enduring, strong institutions. From the judiciary to electoral bodies, law enforcement agencies, legislative structures, and governance systems, the strength or weakness of institutions ultimately determines whether democracy survives moments of pressure or collapses under them.

As Nigerians continue to grapple with concerns surrounding governance, accountability, justice delivery, electoral credibility, and public trust in state institutions, the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), is set to convene another important conversation during its 2026 Law Week focused on one of the most pressing issues confronting the nation’s democratic future.

Themed “Institution Building: Key to Sustainable Democratic Process in Nigeria,” the Day 2 Session 1 engagement will bring together distinguished legal practitioners, policymakers, scholars, advocates, and public intellectuals to examine the role of institutions in protecting democracy, strengthening governance, and sustaining national development.

With respected voices including Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, Senator Shehu Sani, Prof. Chiowa Orizu Uchendu, Dr. Fatima Kere-Ahmed, Prisca N. Udoka, SAN, and Dr. Suleiman I. Nchi expected to lead the conversation, expectations are already building for a thought-provoking session that will challenge ideas, provoke reflection, and spark meaningful dialogue on the future of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
